The New York Times in their piece on Mike Brown earlier this week calling him “no angel,” effectively issued a 21st century “post racial” edict for yet more violence against black people, and it perpetuates the ongoing assault on black life in this country. It is a siren call, recognized by all racists, to kill even more of us “niggers” without culpability before the law (because remember this type of thing happens every 28 hours to black people). The implication of the New York Times piece quite simply is that Mike Brown was a “problem” that needed and deserved to be eliminated. White people will wax obtusely one way or another to pretend like this is not the case or the “intention” of the writers, but you cannot view this in an ahistorical manner and forget the realities of the genocide that has been taking place against black people in this country for centuries. You cannot pretend like the press weren’t the ones pushing calls for lynchings and mob violence and publishing postcards glorifying the killings of black people. You cannot pretend like the New York Times metaphorically hacking into Mike Brown’s body and demonizing him on the day of his funeral is not connected to the same history of white people removing charred ears, toes, penises and other members from the bodies of black lynch victims as souvenirs.
Although they may not be saying directly “Die nigger, die!” and “you had it coming” the effects are the same and are rooted in this same genocidal history. And the piece reifies these same dehumanizing systems which led to Mike Brown’s execution-style murder in the first place. Face that unsavory truth directly and don’t look away.
